Patient and Public Engagement
ThE BRIEF
When NHS Vale of York CCG was considering making changes to its prescribing policy for gluten free foods, I led a formal public consultation in order to meet the CCG’s legal duties and to ensure that the voice of the local community was central to planning and commissioning.
How i delivered the project
I identified the target audience for engagement and ‘hard to reach’ groups, then developed and put into action a communication and engagement strategy. Communications focused on those who would be most impacted by the proposed changes – people currently receiving gluten free foods on prescription. The consultation was publicised via primary and secondary care services, Coeliac UK and other local voluntary sector partners, such as Healthwatch, with messages sent out by letter, email and online. I captured and collated feedback via an online survey and at a face-to-face event where table-based conversations were recorded by a facilitator. Following the consultation, I evaluated the feedback and made recommendations to the CCG’s executive committee based on the consultation data and internal legal advice.

the outcome
High levels of stakeholder satisfaction with the outcome of the consultation were reported. Positive feedback was received from colleagues at York Teaching Hospitals Trust, Coeliac UK, and a number of patients. Only one concern was raised which was acknowledged and a response provided by the medicines management team.
